Why Animal Chiropractic

Similar to humans, animal owners demand more out of their animals than "naturally" intended. Animal ergonomics have also changed over the years.

For example:

Think of a horse. Horses are asked to carry humans, while pulling, running, or jumping over objects. In the wild, a horse rarely needs to jump unless a tree branch has fallen down while it is fleeing from a predator animal. The additional weight of a human while asking the horse to perform other physical activities increase the load and demand on the horse's body, joints, and therefore nervous system.

What tasks do you ask your animal to perform every day?
  • Walk upstairs                                                                        (Shoulders, hips, back)
  • Jump in and out of bed or in a car                                   (Shoulders, hips, wrists, ankles)
  • Look upward to make eye contact with us                    (Neck)
  • Be confined in small spaces for periods of time          (Shoulders, hips, back)
  • Use leashes and harnesses                                               (Shoulder, Neck, Scapulae's)
  • jump and chase                                                                    (Ankle, knees, shoulders, back)
  • pull and tug                                                                           (Neck, Hips, Shoulders, Back)
Chiropractic is an alternative, drugless approach to health care which deals with your animal's central nervous system.  The central nervous system is made of the brain and spinal cord which are housed in the skull and spine of your animal.  The central nervous system controls and coordinates every function of your animal's body, be it a muscular, joint, or organ function.  When spinal misalignments (called subluxations) occur, your animal's nervous system function is compromised.  This compromise may be exhibited through behavior problems, lack of flexibility, muscle soreness, pain, lameness, performance problems, or illness. If your animal has any of these symptoms, call All Spine Chiropractic and Wellness to request an examination to determine whether or not chiropractic care will be of benefit.

What To Expect:

First visit:  Our first small animal chiropractic visit will take about 45mins-1hour depending on how your pet feels with new environments and new people. Future visits should only take about 15-30mins. (Please bring your pet's favorite treats. This will allow us to provide a happy peace offering to him/her as we first get acquainted.)

Posture and gait assessment: We will watch how your dog moves around the office to visualize any gait or postural abnormalities or patterns that may help us find suspected regions of discomfort.

Neurological exam: An abbreviated neurological exam will be performed to assess the dog's withdrawal reflex, DTR, and proprioception.

Chiropractic subluxations scan:  The spine and extremities are assessed for pain, inflammation, or joint restrictions.

Treatment: Chiropractic adjustments are provided by Dr. Alissa. To perform an adjustment, she places her hands on the animal and provides a high-velocity low amplitude (HVLA) force in a specified direction to elicit the release of the joint. Adjustments improve blood circulation, improve mobility, and reduce pain. They also allow for more appropriate neurological flow.

Post treatment: After an initial visit, it is recommended that the animal have 24hours of rest. This does not mean placed in a crate or kennel (unless this is the only way to calm your pet down). It is necessary to let the animal take short walks to improve blood flow and reduce soreness after an adjustment. We do not recommend rough or rowdy play within the 24-hour window after treatment.

Follow-up care: In comparison to humans, animals have more stable spines due to being quadrupeds (having four feet). It is recommended that the animal has a follow-up visit in 7-14days after the initial visit. This will be determined during the initial visit depending on the animal's symptoms and response to care.
