Low-intensity laser therapy that stimulated healing while using low levels of light.

What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold Laser therapy is a low-intensity laser therapy that stimulated healing while using low levels of light. The technique is called “cold” laser therapy because the low levels of light aren’t enough to heat your body’s tissue. The level of light is low when compared to other forms of laser therapy such as those used to coagulate tissue.

During this procedure, different wavelengths and outputs of low-level light are applied directly to a targeted area. The body tissue then absorbs the light. The red and near-infrared light cause a reaction, and the damaged cells respond with a physiological reaction that promotes regeneration.

Superficial tissue is commonly treated with wavelengths between 600 and 700 nanometers (nm). For deeper penetration, wavelengths between 780 and 950 nm are used.

Although you’ll feel the laser device touching your skin, the procedure is painless and noninvasive. There will be no sound and you’ll feel no vibration or heat.

During the procedure, you will see a guide light beam that helps our professionals direct the laser therapy to the correct tissue region.

How often do I need laser therapy?

The frequency of treatments will vary from patient to patient. Cold laser therapy treatments may begin weekly for acute injuries. Treatments are cumulative with laser therapy and a typical course of 7-14 treatments 1-2x day in new pain or 1x every 48-72 hours in long standing pain are usually recommended.

Can laser therapy be billed to insurance?

Although, cold laser therapy is a non-covered service through insurance, patients can use their FSA /HSA to pay for treatments.

How long are laser therapy treatments?

On smaller and shallow anatomy such as a finger joint, treatments could be as little as 30 seconds per point. On larger and deeper anatomy, such as the lumbar spine or hip, treatments may be 5min+ per point depending on the size of the person.

How many areas can be treated during each treatment session?

It is best to only treat one area of pain at a time until a satisfactory therapeutic outcome is achieved in that area. Treating only one area of pain at a time will prevent overtreating the body with laser light energy.
